Joyous moments that reconnect

Kiran’s story - Peterborough

Kiran’s story – Peterborough.

When Kiran first joined our Youth group he came across as very shy, often choosing to do his own thing while occasionally joining in group activities.

He’s has been a valued member of the group for several years. But when some louder children joined the group, there was a period where be began to retreat.

This change became a disruption that triggered Kiran to begin disengaging.

His future felt uncertain, had he outgrown the group?
Did he simply just not enjoy it anymore?

Kiran’s dad flagged his concerns. With so much more to offer, we focused in on reconnecting. And an unexpected WIN during musical chairs became the catalyst for change.

“Yes, I won!” Kiran shouted, when he realised he’d claimed the final seat.

His joy rippled through the room, the sheer pleasure and his contagious smile set the room alight with everyone jumping in to congratulate him.

His delight in the group was rediscovered in a single moment!

Since then, the team has seen a profound shift in Kiran’s behaviour. He has become more engaged, taking part in group activities with a newfound enthusiasm.

One of the most heart warming changes has been the friendship he has developed with one of his peers. Rather than isolating himself in the sensory room with music, Kiran now spends time with his friend at the youth club.

They’ve even sung karaoke together!

Laughter, chats, and shared activities are the new normal for Kiran. He’s gained the courage to politely ask his peers to quieten down, when the noise gets too loud, and as one of the older members his requests are respected. This acknowledgment from his peers has only bolstered his confidence further. Kiran has evolved from a shy and distant observer to an active, confident, and influential group member which we love to see!
