Transformation through advocacy

Jules’ story - Inverclyde

Jules’ story – Inverclyde.

Mary, Jules’ sister, was deeply concerned about the lack of information and support for her brother when she unexpectedly found out that the care home he lived is was going to  close.

Jules had lived there for over 30 years. The prospect of Jules being uprooted without any say in the matter left Mary feeling helpless. She knew that Jules, who had limited communication abilities, needed someone to help him navigate this uncertain journey.

Desperate to ensure Jules’s voice was heard, she sought the assistance of Circles Network to provide the support that Jules needed during this challenging time.

Upon their first meeting with the advocate, Mary poured out her concerns. She expressed how Jules, with his limited ability to communicate, was seemingly being overlooked in the decision-making process. The advocate listened attentively, recognising the importance of ensuring Jules’s rights and preferences were respected. Preserving Jules’ dignity and rights during this difficult time of upheaval was essential.

Observing Jules’ non-verbal cues, detailing his past and present wishes were fundamental for the advocate to learn more about Jules’ personality. Off the back of this exercise and through patience and empathy, the advocate established a connection with Jules, creating an environment where he felt comfortable expressing himself.

Mary’s fears that Jules would be left unaware of the options that were open to him, soon started to ease as the advocate worked diligently to gather information about potential living arrangements. The advocate also engaged with the care providers and authorities involved in the relocation process, advocating for transparency and inclusion for Jules throughout the decision-making process.

All of the information gathered was communicated back to Jules in a way that he could understand. By using a mix of visual aids, simplified language, and constant reassurance, breaking down the complexities of the impending move was made easy to digest.

As the process unfolded, the advocate became Jules’s voice, articulating his preferences and needs to the relevant authorities. Mary witnessed a transformation in her brother, as he began to understand the changes happening around him.

Jules was supported in the decision-making process by an independent advocate, whilst Mary was kept up to date on what was going so. By coming together this circle of support was able to navigate the challenges of relocation with resilience and determination.

Jules successfully transitioned to a new home that fully took into consideration his unique needs and preferences. Mary, once laden with worry, now found solace reassured that her brother’s voice had been heard.
