For Schools and Nurseries
Taking the Reins can provide Equine Facilitated Learning courses for schools and nurseries in term time. We work with children and young people of all abilities and no experience with horses is necessary.
Taking the Reins sessions can help all ages of children and with a whole range of issues and challenges from problems at home, bullying, difficulties making friendships or concentration issues in school; through to finding their voice and ways to communicate, building confidence, self- esteem, trust and developing physical abilities. Our team of facilitators are highly trained and sensitive to children’s needs and the effective ways to stimulate, motivate and engage children at a deep level to develop positive feelings, attitudes and behaviours.
We can provide sessions for any disabled or disadvantaged child or young person and although as a school you may bring a small group of pupils we will develop sessions and experiences specifically to meet the needs of each individual child.
We have had a great deal of success with children with anorexia, autism, ADHD, attachment disorder, depression and other mental, emotional, physical, sensory and learning difficulties. We have also had the opportunity to work positively with children and young people at risk of exclusion to prevent this outcome. Whatever challenges you are managing as a teacher please talk to us about how Taking the Reins may help.
Our programmes can be tailor-made to fit your timetable and the sessions cover many aspects that will improve children and young people's core skills and personal development, including:
- problem solving
- leadership skills
- confidence building.
Usually schools work on a six week rota bringing different set of children each time to experience sessions with our herd of ponies and horses. Sessions are offered term time and during school hours. However, we can also offer after school sessions if time cannot be found in the school day.
We can also bring our ponies to school to run sessions and for school events and provide presentations about the work we do.
All our team, including volunteers, are DBS checked to an enhanced level and we take safeguarding and health and safety very seriously.
For older children
Young people gain a very different range of experiences at Taking the Reins, they can come to volunteer, or for work experience whether they are currently in school or not in education, employment or training. We can run sessions as part of an alternative education programme or as preparation for work in the equine sector. See the section on Horses for Courses for an idea of what these programmes can include.
We can now also offer a full time post 16 education programme, including disabled young people and young people with learning disabilities, who have not been able to find programmes in school and college that meet their needs and support them to flourish.
We can also provide taster session, fun days and activities for young people.
We can organise sessions for you to bring a small group to Taking the Reins or alternatively we can bring our ponies to you if your establishment is within Warwickshire.
We can look at a range of themes within the early years framework, seven areas of learning and development including:
- communication and language
- physical development
- personal, social and emotional development
- understanding the world
- expressive arts and design.
