Peer Mentorship Project, Ely
This project was developed after the
success of a similar project in Peterborough. (Click
here to find out about the Peterborough Peer Mentorship Project) The project
is funded by the Regional Centre of Excellence. The project involves the
bringing together of Year 9 students from Highfield School (school for students
with Learning Difficulties), and year 9 students from City of Ely Community
College. The project supports 19 young people.
As with the Peterborough Peer mentorship project the aims are as follows:
To provide opportunities in curriculum time for disabled and non-disabled young
people to be together, taking part in activities, and for each student to build
their own person centred portfolio.
For friendships to develop and opportunities for social interaction to take
place between students outside of the facilitated sessions.
For the non-disabled young people to undertake a training programme in
Communication, disability awareness and advocacy/mentorship, which will equip
them to assist their disabled peers in building their portfolios and in various
situations including reviews and interviews.
For school staff to have an increased awareness of person centred approaches and
the importance of friendships between disabled and non-disabled young people.
To receive accreditation for this work from an external organisation.
The project is going really well, the students are getting to know each other
and are comfortable in each others' company. They have recently been on a
bowling trip together in the half term holiday, which really shows commitment to
each other and the project. All students are working on a Youth Achievement
award. We are currently liaising with the Connexions worker from Highfield
School to discuss arrangements for the students to be supported in their
Connexion interviews if they wish.
This project ends in April 2008.
